Facing a different challenge

As the Snowdonia Society’s Director, John Harold has faced a number of challenges – ranging from major campaigns to protect our National Park to finding the resources to grow the Society’s practical conservation work across Snowdonia.

At the end of June this year John is taking on a different kind of challenge – the Snowdonia Challenge to be precise – a 100 kilometre walk in Snowdonia over 3 days which takes in over 5,000 metres of ascent – that’s more than the height of Mont Blanc.  The challenge takes place from 29th June to 1st July, with participants setting out each day from Betws y Coed.

John says:

‘ This will be an uphill struggle for me, but I’m determined to do it.  I’m raising money to show respect for Snowdonia Society volunteers and staff who go out in all weathers to help look after our magnificent National Park.  They are quite simply heroes.  Together they have invested a remarkable 10,800 hours of their time in looking after Snowdonia over the last 3 years.  I feel I should make a big effort too…

The Society provides helping hands and a clear voice for Snowdonia.  But it’s also about the heart – each of us has our own relationship with this special place.  Please support this Snowdonia Challenge  – together we can all do our bit, make a difference. and show that we really care.

Thank you so much for your support ! ‘

Why this particular event?

John says:  ‘I chose this event because it is well-organised and carefully thought through.  It’s a ‘single-use-plastic-free’ event which avoids the over-worked honeypots such as Snowdon itself, takes people to some lovely places which can cope with visitors and – as a multi-day event – brings benefits to the local economy.  The event itself is also kept to a sensible scale and has a friendly and non-competitive ethos.  The Snowdonia Challenge organisers are based in Snowdonia and work hard to give something back to the environment in which they work.’
