6,000 call for protection of Conwy Falls & Fairy Glen

On Friday 5th February, Aberconwy Assembly Member Janet Finch-Saunders will receive a petition with more than 6,000 names, to deliver in person to Carl Sargeant, Minister for Natural Resources. The petition asks him to ensure that Conwy Falls & the Fairy Glen are protected from development.

The petition will be handed over by representatives of conservation, outdoor activities, watersports and local business. Those attending include the Directors of the Snowdonia Society and North Wales Wildlife Trust, Communications Officer for the Woodland Trust, and official reps from Canoe Wales, Snowdonia Active and local businesses.

A hydropower scheme on the River Conwy proposed by multinational energy giant RWE has outraged anglers, canoeists, conservationists and local businesses. Over 800 objection letters have been written to the Planning Committee and hundreds more to Natural Resources Wales, which is responsible for licensing the abstraction of water from the river.

Snowdonia Society Director John Harold said:

“We’ve made clear to the Planning Committee and to Natural Resources Wales that people want Conwy Falls and Fairy Glen Site of Special Scientific Interest to be properly protected.

This petition signed by over 6,000 people carries an important message to the Minister for Natural Resources: that so many people value protected sites like Fairy Glen SSSI and value designated landscapes such as Snowdonia National Park.

These are wild places that really matter to people, not a Wild West frontier to be opened up for the benefit of multinationals. They are the nation’s breathing spaces, places of renewal, our outdoor NHS.”
