Sustainable Energy and Tourism in Snowdonia

The tourism industry plays a key role in shaping the unique environment and sustaining the local economy and communities of Snowdonia. Indeed, whilst the first statutory purpose of the National Park is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage, the second purpose is to promote opportunities for the public understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the area. With a population of 26,000 within the National Park the tourism industry provides the equivalent of 9,000 full time jobs. All this is worth an estimated £385m to the local economy!

However, tourism has an environmental impact and without careful thought and consideration the two Park purposes can conflict with one another with the promotion and development of tourism hindering conservation. This is why we all need to make our use of the Park more sustainable. If not the very qualities that make Snowdonia special today will be gradually lost.

The Sustainable Energy and Tourism (SEAT) Project Officer, Dr. Emma Edwards-Jones will seek to raise awareness and encourage the wider uptake of sustainable practices within the tourism sector in the National Park. For example the project will:

· Develop a website, showcasing best practice within the park and providing practical information to tourism businesses and visitors.

· Run the exciting new Green Snowdonia Tourism award (PDF)providing an opportunity for businesses to show off their sustainable prowess!
