Cyfarfu aelodau Cymdeithas Eryri dros y penwythnos
(6-7 Hydref) ar gyfer eu Cyfarfod Blynyddol Cyffredinol ac i ddathlu
gweledigaeth sefydlwyr y Gymdeithas fel rhan o ben-blwydd y Gymdeithas yn 40
oed. Bellach mae gan y
Gymdeithas, a sefydlwyd ym 1967, dros 2600 o aelodau sy’n gweithio i warchod
a gwella Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri.
Ar ddydd Sadwrn, wedi taith gerdded yng nghoedwig Gwydir, cafodd
aelodau gyfle i glywed gan y staff a’r ymddiriedolwyr am waith amrywiol y
Gymdeithas yn ei blwyddyn pen-blwydd ruddem. Mae’r aelodaeth wedi cynyddu, ac mae gwaith gwella’r
Gymdeithas wedi esblygu gyda datblygiad prosiectau mentrus fel y gwaith
arloesol o hyrwyddo Twristiaeth Gynaliadwy yn yr ardal (www.eryri-gwrydd.co.uk) a’r rhaglen
o waith cadwraeth gan wirfoddolwyr, sydd eisoes wedi ennill gwobrwyon. Sicrhawyd hyn, a llawer mwy, law yn
llaw â gwaith ymgyrchu’r Gymdeithas sy’n seiliedig ar bolisi, ac sy’n parhau
i gyfrannu at ffyniant y Parc Cenedlaethol. Ar
ddydd Sul cerddodd aelodau a gwesteion ar hyd y llwybr lefel isel yn Nyffryn
Mymbyr (lleoliad llyfr adnabyddus Thomas Firbank sef I Bought a Mountain, tir
sydd bellach yng ngofal yr Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol). Yn ystod y daith dadorchuddiwyd sedd
garreg i ddathlu sylfaenwyr diweddar y Gymdeithas sef Esme a Peter
Kirby. Adeiladwyd y sedd, a
gynlluniwyd gan Judy Greaves, artist a dringwr brwd, gan staff yr
Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol, gyda’r amcan o adlewyrchu nerth personoliaeth
Esme wrth ymddodi i’r tirlun trawiadol a hardd y bu Esme a Peter yn ei
warchod mor ddiwyd. John Disley
CBE, llywydd y Gymdeithas, oedd yng ngofal y dathliadau gyda chyfraniadau gan
David Firth, Cadeirydd y Gymdeithas, John Morgan, Cyfarwyddwr Rhanbarthol yr
Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol a Bob Lowe o Ymddiriedolaeth Eryri Esme Kirby a
gyfrannodd tuag at gostau’r sedd. Gan edrych yn ôl ar y
penwythnos dywedodd Dan James, Cyfarwyddwr Gweithrediadau’r Gymdeithas, “Mae
hi’n amlwg bod y Gymdeithas wedi symud ymlaen dros y 40 mlynedd diwethaf, ac
wedi cyfrannu’n fawr tuag at sicrhau bod cenedlaethau heddiw a’r dyfodol yn
gallu elwa o’r tirlun bendigedig hwn.
Rydym i gyd yn hynod o ddiolchgar i Esme a Peter Kirby am sefydlu’r
Gymdeithas a’i harwain drwy’r blynyddoedd cynnar – mae ein gwaith wedi
esblygu a datblygu ond mae hi’n amlwg ein bod yn parhau i wireddu amcan
cyntaf Esme sef bod y Gymdeithas yn gweithredu i warchod Eryri.” Am ragor o wybodaeth am waith y Gymdeithas a’r cyfleoedd

Snowdonia Society members met at the weekend (6-7th
October) for their Annual General Meeting and to celebrate the Society’s
founders as part of the Society’s 40th anniversary. Founded
in 1967 the Society now has over 2600 members working to protect and enhance
the Snowdonia National Park. On Saturday, following a walk in the Gwydir
forest, members had the opportunity to hear from senior staff and trustees of
the varied work of the Society in its ruby anniversary year. Membership has
grown, and the Society’s enhancement work has evolved with the development of
innovative projects such as the ground-breaking work on promoting Sustainable
Tourism in the area (www.green-snowdonia.co.uk)
and the award-winning programme of volunteer conservation work. This, and
much more, has been achieved alongside the Society’s well-established policy
based campaign work, which continues to contribute to the well being of the
National Park. On
Sunday members and guests walked along the low level path at Dyffyrn Mymbyr
(the setting for Thomas Firbank’s iconic book I Bought a Mountain and
now in the care of the National Trust). During the walk a stone-sculpted seat
was unveiled celebrating the late founders of the Society Esme and Peter
Kirby. Designed by Judy Greaves, an artist and keen climber, the seat was
constructed by National Trust staff, with the aim of reflecting the strength
of Esme’s personality whilst being in harmony with the dramatic and beautiful
landscape that Esme and Peter so tirelessly devoted themselves to conserving.
John Disley CBE, president of the Society, presided over the celebrations
with contributions from David Firth, Chair of the Society, John Morgan,
Regional Director for the National Trust and Bob Lowe of the Esme Kirby
Snowdonia Trust who contributed to the costs of the seat. Reflecting
on the weekend Dan James, the Society’s Operations Director said “It is clear
that the Society has come a long way over the last 40 years, and has been
instrumental in ensuring that present and future generations can benefit from
this fantastic landscape. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Esme and
Peter Kirby for founding the Society in the first place and leading it
through its formative years – our work has evolved and developed but it is
clear to see that we remain true to Esme’s initial aim that the Society
should become one of action.” For

and benefits, please visit www.snowdonia-society.org.uk
