Dry Stone Walling Competition

Competitors at the 20th Snowdonia Society Dry Stone Walling Competition 2003 (c) D James

There are few sights which can be so evocative of Snowdonia than a traditional dry stone wall. They not only provide a stock proof barrier, but also a habitat for lichen and small mammals, shelter for farm animals from the summer sun, and, for those who enjoy the beauty of the landscape, a superb characteristic feature of the Snowdonia landscape.

The existence of dry stone walls, and their maintenance today, is due to the ancient and skilled craft of dry stone walling, that has been passed down from generations over the centuries. The Snowdonia Society have sought for many years to promote the ancient craft of dry stone walling and for twenty years running now, the Society has organised an annual dry stone walling competition.

Competitors from all over North Wales and beyond battle it out, in pursuit of one of the trophies and cash prizes. Entries are invited for Amateur, semi-professional and Professional Categories. All competitors who successfully complete their stint receive a small payment and there are cash and trophy prizes for all three categories.

Spectators are also welcome to see first hand the skill needed to build a lasting wall.
